A Shakin' Hot Winter

It's extremely apt that spring is on the way because we are really in line with some new beginnings going on.

I start a new job on Monday! It's with a small company that makes websites and software and guess what? They want someone to organize them! Among other tasks. Sounds like it will be a great fit and the office is in town about equal distance from the sea and this lovely, huge park. Perfect lunch-hour stroll territory.

We are still on the house hunt. We've looked at over 25 places by now and this week have seen one that is warranting a second/closer look. This is only the second one we've been to more than once. That last one just didn't thrill as much on the second visit so we didn't go further. But this one Dustin is going to crawl around in the attic and crawlspace to examine it further. So, will be deciding in the next few days if we want to offer on it.

The last time we actually were home shopping would have been just before we got married, in 2006. But a fast-paced market rapidly wore us down and we decided not to buy then. I still look back at that as a major turning point since if we had bought, there would have been very different life choices afterwards. But for me it's a huge "phew" because it might have meant we didn't end up in New Plymouth!

We've had a BC visitor lately as well. Dustin's sister has been in town since the 7th. She had a friend with her initially as they did a tiki tour around the North Island before arriving in NP. Now she's experiencing all the excitement New Plymouth can offer until the 24th. On the books tonight is the arts festival lantern parade! Alas, we did not make it to a lantern-making workshop but I reckon it's cooler to watch than be in.

Visitors always give us an excuse to take another look at the beauty that surrounds us.

The "three" sisters formations. One fell shortly after the sign was put up.

A happy rock man.

Mother nature has been keeping us all guessing lately. Last week we had a stretch of 3 days that were all sun and 20+ degrees. But it's winter! It's usually under 10 degrees. I welcome the change of course! Then, the country has also been shaking again.

Yesterday there were two earthquakes (aftershocks if you want to be technically correct) that were 6.2 and up. Tanya and I were driving during one so I honestly though we had caught a gust of wind (because well winter did return, complete with tornado warnings on Tuesday night - but they didn't come to fruition) off the water as we crossed town between buildings. The second one though was felt by us all as we sat in the lounge room just before dinner! We are about 400km from the epicentre but it still gave us a good 20 second wake up.

But I'm sticking with the new beginnings theme rather than the ominous weather/natural disasters theme. Bring on the lantern parade!

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
