Hitting a Wall Somewhere In Between

It feels like it's already been a week since Friday. We both finished work on Friday and had such a full weekend that on our big first day to tackle our giant to-do list I am totally sapped of energy.

We have 13 more sleeps until we go. Phew. That sounds longer "less than two weeks" left. Packing is the major item on the list of course. We'll be sending some of our stuff via air separately from us so luckily that just needs to happen a few days before departure at the latest. However we definitely don't want to be scrambling to get it all sorted out at the last minute.

Up until now I haven't really wavered on knowing this is the right move. It has felt so in line with what we want for our life. But lately I've had a few doubts. Not specific doubts about it being right but just weird feelings. I think a lot of it depends on the kind of reactions we get about it and it's been affecting me more now that it's getting closer. I can't pinpoint why at all. Maybe it's more reason to just dive in and enjoy. We will never be able to control how other people feel about it (and really, as long as we are happy, other people's opinions don't play a major role in our decision-making because it is our lives) so I guess dwelling on any less-than-supportive reactions is useless. We can just hope that anyone who is unhappy about it will channel that into making themselves happier in their life.

Getting through this time in between one place and another is a challenge sometimes. It's full of so many "too"s - there's either too much time or too little time. Too many visits to fit in, too many to-dos to complete. Too much to pack, too many goodbyes. Though it all finds a way to work itself out, sometimes it's too much stress. I think we're going to have to institute a daily laugh requirement to make sure we don't get cranky with each other given that we've put so much into this plan and ultimately it's not each other that we'd be mad at but just the overflow of all the pressure. I think we need to look ahead to all the good things we'll experience and try not to let ourselves get overwhelmed.

One thing I'm super excited about is going to see a 7 Days taping. It's a current events comedy show that's broadcast on Friday nights there and they open up the filming to anyone who signs up to be in the audience. We had such a laugh last time that I made a point to look it up a few months ago since there's only one Thursday that we'll be in Auckland (which is where and when they do the tapings).

I also found that one of our favorite Kiwi comics has a show in New Plymouth in May so I think we will need to book some tickets for that!

Here's to a lot of Kiwi laughs!

  1. A daily laugh sounds like a really, really good stress reliever. Also, Rhys Darby is flippin' hilarious! You must go.

Second guessing yourself is natural. It just means that you are human - but I think for sure that you've made the right decision!

    1. Yes, we bought our Rhys Darby tickets last night without much hesitation!

Thanks for the support! I think part of the difference is that we left ourselves more time than we have in the past from end of work to take off date so I guess it's kind of likely that a little more time means more downtime to think. I kind of want to just be there!

  2. Hey Katherine, don't worry about the folks who have the "unhappy" reactions. You can never keep everyone happy! And I know once you guys actually get to New Plymouth, and start to settle in, you will not be missing the traffic, the high cost of living, the construction everywhere and all of the other BS in the lower mainland. You will be stuffing your face with declicious NZ meat pies and be like Hells Yeah!! :) Only less than a week - hang in there.

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
