Beach day

Summer has definitely arrived and has reminded us daily for the last week (at least) with its bright sunshine, clear skies and hot temperatures.

You know what that means. Beach day!

Last Saturday, we met some friends up the coast at White Cliffs. They brought the kayaks and Dustin brought the bait but we didn't take any fish home. We last visited this beach on our very first stint in New Plymouth and oddly we hadn't made the trek north since.

Sometimes it just takes a little encouragement from friends. And the promise of beach cricket.

It was a lovely hot day so we brought umbrellas and snacks. I didn't really swim because I'm not really an ocean swimmer but Dustin was so far out in the kayak with Andy and his brother-in-law that I couldn't see them anymore. So, I amused myself by building a sand dog with Andy's niece. Her friend's dog just had ten puppies (nine if you take away the one the dog sat on) so we made a model of that dog and her puppies. Yes they are wearing seashell jewelry. Better enter that one in the sandcastle contest.

Then we rounded out the day with some beach cricket. I hadn't run or been active for a weeks since my gym membership ended in mid-December and then I was so bloody sick over Christmas. (I am still phlegm-y!) So the next day my arm and legs were feeling all of the amazing catches and runs. On a side note, I miss softball! There just wasn't enough interest this year so there wasn't really a league.

One of my favourite signs of summer is the pōhutukawa blossoms coming out! Those are the red ones in the tree. Last year we didn't get a good showing that I remember but this year they are all over and it's beautiful. They are often alongside the ocean and the contrast with the blues of the Tasman is stunning. I guess this shot isn't actually all that great but I will try for a better one before they are gone!

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
