Way back in the land where when we played video games on the computer, I used to be quite into it. Of course NES and SNES were great too. That's why I was so excited to come across this amazing archive of so many old school games.
I've already played a round of Carmen Sandiego (and caught the criminal but missed my promotion). There are so many games I grew up with either playing in the computer lab at Frost Road on those old Macs that were grey rectangles, or at arcades and on our Nintendo systems.
I miss the simplicity of those games. I can't even play any Playstation or Xbox games anymore because they are all so complex (and I don't have the interest to learn) or you need to actually keep your balance! Or they are mostly war shooting games. What happened to building bridges so one hundred lemmings made it safely home? Or all of the movie-based games that came in over the years (I mean Wayne's World and Beethoven's 2nd spawned games?!)? I guess some of the NES games were really difficult too (did anyone ever pass the second level of Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers??) but there seemed to be more variety.
I used to really like Jones in the Fast Lane which is kind of lame because the game was getting a job and going to work and paying rent! Yikes, how quickly kids want to grow up.
I was fascinated to read this story about a guy who educated his son on video games by taking him through all of the systems in order! It sounds like he's created a gaming Wizard (side note: if that movie didn't spawn a video game then that's a shame!) along the way and it's actually quite a cool experiment in the world of constant "connection" and kids having mobile phones in elementary school or using iPads in preschool.
I guess the internet kind of took over gaming in a way, rather than sitting at a computer playing a CD-ROM game, people could do all sorts of things on the internet. That does make sense, as soon as napster came along, I remember my brother and I watching downloaded episodes of Jackass instead of playing games anymore. So I guess there is a time and phase for everything so I am glad to know that there is now a way to return to that time and play some of these games again! Thanks whoever was responsible for this!!
