Lost for Words?

You'll notice that my posts have become a lot less frequent and sometimes less rambling and more photos! I wonder if it's a sign that we've sort of gotten into a pattern of just living here now and not feeling like we're traveling here for a while.

Also it might be the same reason that I'm not active on Facebook and Twitter - do you guys really want to know our every move? Especially as they become more mundane? haha.

We finally got around to decorating one of the big blank walls in our place. Thanks to a 25 cent poster at the book sale and Dustin's Kiwi ingenuity we have a lovely framed print of "The Hustler" which was one of the best-selling prints of the 1950's.

Dustin's work hours have abated ever so slightly, they cut the end of the day from 5:30pm to 5:00pm which is great news for him this week as the surf picks up. It's been pretty grim on the water lately and the surf hasn't come right for a good two weeks or so. This week he'll hopefully get back in the Tasman.

We caught some good luck and scored tickets to a beerfest at a local brewery that had been sold out for weeks. This gave us very little time to prepare our costumes - yep it was Oktoberfest themed and people are keen to dress up here! So Dustin ended up kitted out but I just dressed normally. We went with my boss and a workmate but ran into other friends we had met a few times before at rugby and social events. There was a brass band for a couple hours and then a meal and a cover band after that. My favourite part was the "mechanical bull" which was a surfboard instead of a bull and was surrounded by an inflatable wave. I mastered it to the top level - before a random guy in the crowd jumped up and tackled me off! I think the game turned from stay on the board the longest to who could jump up and tackle the person off when they weren't suspecting it. They ran buses from town up to the brewery which is about 45 minutes north of town so that we didn't have to worry about drink driving. We just had to worry about getting on the right bus at the end of the night! It was fun and we weren't even hungover - some may say that we didn't really experience a beerfest then but don't worry, we managed to fill up our take home one-litre steins a few times over.

Don't look too closely... it may or may not be a Christmas table decoration I found at the op shop.

Fun was had by all and we might have even made a few friends along the way.

Without Halloween being a proper celebration here, we won't be incorporating any spooky fun into our week. But we do have some other things to look forward to. In a month I will be attending the Youth Conference for my Union (much to my boss' amusement/horror, their definition of "youth" is under 35... she calls ageism because she wants in!). That's down in Wellington for two days so I get to go on a little jaunt on my own. I might add a day to go to the awesome museum Te Papa there as well. Also we have our first visitor from BC booked to come visit - Dustin's mom is arriving a bit before Christmas and leaving a bit after New Year's so we are trying to make some plans around where to go then in the busiest of travel times in the country. We missed a booking on holiday homes we were eyeballing so we aren't sure yet where we'll head.

Until next time, we'll be working and doing our everyday routines... not much to report on with that!

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
