What's a few years?

It's a long time when you're talking sporting skills. We took our mountain bikes out to the trails here back on Anzac Day and without intending to, started on the most difficult trail. I was trying to be all gung ho because the city tricked us into thinking it was a beautiful day. But 10-15 minutes away at the bike trails there was a fine rain coming down. So I tackled the tough trail until we hit a drop of a few meters. I decided it was a good idea to just walk my bike down but then I turned a corner and found another drop. Dustin was behind and hadn't quite started down before I said "nah" and walked my bike back up. We eventually found some mellower rides but boy did I get tired fast. The surprise to Dustin was that he used to fly off jumps like those we were riding around! So a few years ("few" being a bit generous to the fact that I am probably speaking of 7-8 years?) makes a major difference.

Then on the other hand, a few years can feel like nothing when it's catching up with friends. We haven't seen Luke for a good 3 years but it didn't feel like that long when he was here visiting. He was off on the bus Friday morning but we got to enjoy a sunny round of golf at the seaside course up north and Dustin took a day off so they cruised around the coast and went for a couple hikes. It's nice to hang out with other "gypsies" like us because we have more of an understanding about why travel is so awesome. He just finished driving around Australia! A fair few more kilometers than we covered over there.

So it's been a busy week and we were asleep by 8:30pm Friday night. Party.

People often ask what we miss from BC and most of the time we can't come up with an answer. However, we do miss being able to get perogies for a quick weeknight meal. They just don't sell them here that we've seen. So, as you do, I decided it was high time to learn to make them. The first round turned out alright so we've got a bag in the freezer for another couple feeds. It was quite timely because we are endeavoring to do Meatless May this month. Well, it started May 3 because we didn't want to enforce a menu restriction when we had a guest - especially one who cooks up a mean Chinese BBQ pork!

The idea was borne from musings around New Year's Resolutions and how we don't really subscribe to the idea of them but would rather just set goals when we want and achieve them when we want. But since we did Dry July last year we thought of other lifestyle changes we could try for a period of time. Since March was far too busy to do a meatless month (I know it's not really difficult but for us it takes a bit of thinking) - May it is! I mean it always helps to have a bit of alliteration to help.

We will probably do a variation on Dry July and shift it into August because we don't want to be beerless while in Mexico and visiting friends in BC. So we'll let you know how it goes! We figure it'll run until June 2 - Dustin's 30th. We're doing the Naki Run Amuck race that day and plan to finish it up with a big meaty BBQ. So almost perfect timing!

Just over 6 weeks until we depart for BC and we can't believe how quick that's coming up. A great piece of news - we have already been assigned a case manager for our residency application! It said that could take up to 24 weeks but we must have come in at a good time because it only seemed to take a week or so for us. So fingers crossed things run smooth from there!

It looks like our IPA beer is ready to bottle today which is on the bill for this rainy afternoon so I should get going. It's a two man job.

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
