The Department of Decisions

I'll get the bad news out of the way, I didn't get the hospital job. I called on Friday to ask and the manager said something along the lines of, "We had some unusually good candidates with some unusually specifically-related experience." So, although I was a "strong candidate" I was not selected. Take this as sour grapes or honesty - I do think it would have been a job that would have bored me quickly. So it's probably not the worst thing.

Dustin had success on Friday though. Fed up with waiting on other jobs, he decided to apply within the construction industry. He dropped off a CV to a big local company and received a call not more than ten minutes later asking if he was still looking for work. Good thing he reined in his cheekiness and just said yes. They asked him to an interview on Monday. Later that day he received another call from a smaller company that he had applied for the day before and booked another interview for Monday. Then he got a response from a tree-trimming/aborist company and was booked to meet them as well. High spirits followed.

Anyways, I got started with my training for the budget advisory service on Saturday. There was a morning session regarding consumer affairs that was aimed at the experienced advisors but they invited us trainees along as well. Then we got into the background training in the arvo (have I explained that's short for afternoon?) and the next session is on Tuesday evening. I really think it's going to be interesting to get involved with clients once I'm done training. I think we get to sit in on other sessions with experienced advisors before we're on our own.

Sunday was a beautiful day for golf. Especially when the course is situated next to the ocean and it costs $8 for as many holes as you want. We stopped at 18. The courses here are quite chill and don't usually have full-time staff. They have an honesty box that you pay and there's an attendant that makes his way around on a little moped to check that you paid. Dustin's been out a few times already with a fellow he used to work with so I joined them this week. You had the choice of listening to birdsong or crashing waves and occasionally, a passing vehicle. Lovely day! Not that our golf was up to par - this was my first time on a proper course that wasn't just a par 3 and Dustin was taking out his new driver for the first time. They don't have a driving range here so of course there was a bit of breaking it in.

Today Dustin's first interview was broken up as follows:
-5-7 minutes - talk about surfing
- 2-3 minutes - talk about what your wife does and the fact they might have a related position open
- 5 minutes - talk about Dustin's NZ experience and realize his past supervisor currently works for this company

So, all in all, exactly the kind of interview that sets you at ease. This was for the big construction company here. So later on, Dustin went to the tree interview and I dropped off my CV at the first place. Then he went over to the small company and rounded up the super interview day. He is struggling to decide what he wants but all of the interviews went well. So he at least has a night to sleep on it before he reckons he'll hear from any of them. There were details for all of them to work out - where he'd be needed, approval from head office to hire another worker, and such.

So maybe by this coming Friday one of us will have some luck! If not, at least there's another comedy show on the horizon with a guy we have yet to see doing his own show yet. He's on 7 Days and does a podcast we listen to. The show is on Dustin's birthday so I'll have to keep quiet that night about it haha. He's planning to post up some photos from his Surf Saturday and the golf so watch for that in the coming days!

For now, the search for work continues...

  1. Oh my goodness, that's such great news about Dustin! It's always nice to be able to pick who you want to work for! Keep us posted on where he ends up.

I'm sorry that you didn't get the hospital gig, but if you felt that it wouldn't be exactly the most stimulating environment to work in, it's probably better not to have gotten it, then to get bored and then feel obligated to stay. And things are already falling in place! You'll be employed sooner than you think, and then you'll be thinking wistfully about that time when you were look for work! (At least I do that :)

Jeeeze, that golf game sounds lovely! The sun is finally shining here - lets hope it stays that way!

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
