A Splash of Pura Vida

Because I am a complete bandwagon jumper, I joined the pool at work for the World Cup. I certainly don't profess to know anything about soccer/football and I wouldn't have given it much thought in the past. But I work with a few football nuts so I knew I'd be hearing about it and figured why not also have the chance to win money while I'll be subjected to the topic anyways.

So, the team I drew was Costa Rica. Cool for me, because I've actually been there and know a little bit about the place. (Not that their football prowess really enters much into the Honeymoon trip of non-fans but I do remember that every town we went though, no matter how small, had 3 things: a supermercado, a church and a soccer field.)

Now that they are on a bit of a roll I am extra pleased to have drawn them. It gives me a reason to think of Costa Rica more!

So I thought I'd share a couple pictures with you. Gosh, this was back before the plague of social media so I think we have actual printed photos of the trip, which means most of you wouldn't have seen honeymoon pics at all!

Whoa, eight years really catches up with ya...

The best thing about the trip probably was taking home a bit of the Pura Vida attitude that we experienced. Whenever any Costa Ricans explained it to us, it was just like a "no worries - live life to the fullest - be happy" kind of attitude. Sometimes they had no other words for it because obviously it's more of a feeling and a way of life than a specifically defined thing. Googling it now (definitely not something that was part of the vernacular or habit then...) the usage is similar to the Maori greeting "Kia Ora" which is a greeting but also an acknowledgement of someone or a thank you.

So, I'm keeping my eyes on the team and hope they do well. The country was such a happy place, and the people friendly and well spoken (yes I am sure it was very much a rose-coloured glasses view...) but still, the kind of place that you really root for. So here's to another exciting game coming up!

  1. While I love the story behind why you chose Costa Rica as your world cup team to root for I have to disagree with your choice. It's nice your team made it as far as they did but they are going down on Saturday! Hup Holland!!

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
