Milestones

(So funny how one word can bring back all these memories - I haven't thought about that restaurant Milestones in years but as I typed that, whoa, life in the Lower Mainland returns.)

What I was writing about was the fun ways that we've celebrated some milestone birthdays with friends over the last several months. Now I don't think it has to be a milestone to require extra special celebrating but I guess there is a nice ring to it.

Some of the party fun that's gone on...

Rachel's "Phat 40" Quentin Tarantino party. There were probably upwards of 60 people all decked out as various Tarantino characters dancing it up until about 3am... ok, not everyone stayed until then. For those of us who haven't seen more than maybe one of his films, well it sure was a challenge to pick something. I chose the easy girl costume of Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. I don't even remember the character name but that doesn't matter! They went all out, hired a hall and decorated it like crazy and it was great to see the effort that went into the costumes too!

And funny enough, the next day we had a 30th birthday to attend. This one was a surprise party centered around whiskey and dessert. The birthday girl was informed moments before the surprise because everything got a little suspicious but it was all in good fun. They hired a local bartender to take us through 3 whiskeys and 3 cocktails using whiskey or bourbon. We learned and sampled and there was even fireworks. The hosts built a bar and transformed their living room into a whiskey lounge. Great times!!

Then the most recent 40th we went to was a hangi at his parents' farm. There must have been over one hundred people and there was a marquee and a dance floor - not to mention an amazing cake made by the birthday boy's mom! We secretly chipped in for a dive trip as a surprise so that's why the cake was underwater themed. If you don't know what a hangi is, it's where the food is cooked underground over hot stones and everything is tasty and incredible. So many wild meats and delicious fixings. We camped overnight and got to have leftovers for breakfast even.

We've been lucky to be part of such thoughtful celebrations, but hey you don't have to wait until your next decade to celebrate with such fun themes! Why not anytime? :)

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
