Seeing through the fog

Now that it's getting cool overnight, we're learning the real lesson of how houses are built here.

Ugh. Condensation.
Yes, it's actually dripping!
This certainly isn't because we're keeping the house so warm or anything, it's just the symptoms of poor housing standards. It really makes us think that if we bought a house here, we'd strongly consider a newer one that's been built to the newer standards.

Not just in the living room either, this is the bedroom window.
It's making me wonder where all this moisture goes. I don't see any mold anywhere but surely it's lurking. My clothes hanging in the closet seem to always feel damp. Hilariously, we learned that if you take clothes to the laundromat to put in an actual dryer, don't bring them home at 98% dry and hang them to finish. The next morning you'll wake up and find they feel wetter than when you took them out of the dryer. Oops.

We don't want to wait for the heat pump to be installed (which seems to be a long time out considering the company hasn't even contacted our landlords to set up a date yet!) so I got us a dehumidifier. A novel thing for us. Hopefully we notice a difference.

Over the weekend Dustin did a bit of work on the bike we got so it's starting to look a little more spiffy. I guess since you didn't see it at first this won't look very good.

Vroom vroom.

We've been starting to do some heavy thinking about what we want in our lives and how we want to shape them over the next several months. We have some choices to make about immigration possibilities and how they may pan out for us. To be honest, it's not the most fun state to not know what we want to do but in coming here at all, we sparked a fire. Now is our chance to decide to feed the fire or see if it burns out.

Over the last several years we've been learning to listen to ourselves and to each other. We're learning to recognize our limits (or more truthfully, our non-negotiables) and to pinpoint what makes us happy. Putting all these lessons together in one life though is not the most simple thing to do. So it's a matter of weighing up what we find to be important and then jumping in. I think that not feeling sure right now might be more of a fear-induced feeling. Of course, jumping in means a whole lot of things so it's not a quick yes or no answer. However, in the past we really can't say that there was a point where things didn't work out so I recognize that we need to trust ourselves to know what's best for us. It's definitely worked for us before. If we just played safe we would never know the bounds of our trust. So maybe it's time to test it again.

Because it sure would be nice to see things clearly for the next while...

The view without the fog. The sun is just rising.

  1. Yikes! That condensation looks horrible! I can't believe most of the houses there are like that! Hopefully the dehumidifier helps :-)

  2. Holy condensation batman! Hope the humidifier works wonders :)

Sorry it's been so long since I read/commented - life seems to be running away from us over here! It's cool to hear how well you and Dustin work together as a team, and how this experience is helping the two of you understand what is important for you both, and what it is you want for the future.

    Take care!

Taranaki Rugby!

Some photos from the game on Saturday afternoon. The wind caused a few wayward kicks and the torrential downpour mid-game made the ball slip all over the place but then the sun came out and Taranaki won! They were playing Canterbury who are now behind them by one place in the rankings. We had fun and managed to walk there and back without catching any of the rain. The steam-breathing drivable mascot I don't think the photo does justice to just how much it was raining! Line out Go the 'Naki! (They are the yellow and black team.)

Not for the squeamish

Well the long hours of work and planning and helping friends demo sheds and paper shuffling and biking and cooking and eating and cleaning have caught up with us and Dustin has relinquished his right to tell his story from last week. **Note, the pictures are gross so beware if you are a little faint seeing blood... So, last Friday I had worked the early shift and was back at home on a call with a virtual assisting client, so naturally my mobile was on silent, and as soon as I hung up, the home phone rang. (This is a phone that only people who have had a part in giving birth to one of us tend to use... that and wrong numbers, we get a surprising number of wrong numbers...) Anyways when Dustin's voice was on the other end the confusion began. "Hi, I'm at the hospital. Come here now." "What happened??" "I'm fine. Just come up here." (Wheels spinning in my head...) "Are you sure? I think it will take me too long to bike because I
